The Laughing Yogi
The Laughing Yogi is a medical doctor from Mumbai, India who had a theory that laughter would improve one’s health, whether it was genuine laughter or not. He founded the concept of laughter yoga and has been popularly referenced as the Guru of Giggling.
Dr. Kataria started out in 1995 with just a small group of people in a public park but now has many, many followers and people who attend workshops and seminars to find out how to practice laughter yoga. The idea is that you laugh without a joke or a comedian or any tickling or anything else that would normally induce laughter. The laughter is combined with yoga breathing. You just laugh. And it will start out as a fake laugh that somewhere along the way becomes real.
Devotees believe that it reduces stress and helps the immune system to fight disease. Laughter yoga is based on the assumption that the body cannot differentiate between real and fake laughter and that the benefits will be the same.
It doesn’t sound like such a bad idea. I like to laugh. Hell, if I didn’t laugh so much I probably would have had cancer a long time ago. I would do it. I wonder if it does anything for high blood pressure or diabetes. Thumbs up.
