Jessica Hahn & Barbara Walters
Betcha never thought you’d get to say those names in a single sentence. Apparently, The View is so hard up for real news this week that they invited Hahn, the moderately attractive redhead who brought down Jim Bakker in the PTL scandal of the 1980s, to talk on The View.
Don’t even get me started on how stupid The View is. It represents itself as being a politically neutral show about women’s issues, but throws poor Elizabeth Hasselbeck into the lion’s den every morning. Making Hasselbeck be the sole representative for conservatism is like expecting George W. Bush to hold his own in a debate against, well, someone smart. Can’t they get her some help? I mean, besides the woman who thinks the earth is flat. She means well. Oh, well, Hasselbeck’s hot, at least.
If you’re too young to know (and there’s a distinct possibility that you might be since Hahn’s fifteen minutes have been up since I graduated from high school), Jessica Hahn allegedly had an affair with televangelist Jim Bakker. She maintains that it was a rape. He paid her in order to keep quiet, and when this was exposed so was a lot of other hinky financial stuff. This resulted in Jim Bakker’s going to jail and wife Tammy Faye’s being forced to buy her jewelry at K-Mart. Oh, how the mighty fall!
Hahn parlayed her instant celebrity into a boob job and some plastic surgery and immediately proved what an upstanding young Christian woman she was by appearing scantily clad in rock music videos and dating comedian Sam Kinison.
No one but Jessica and Jim know what happened between the two of them, and it’s entirely possible that there might have even been a misunderstanding of some sort. He said the sex was consensual. We’ll never know.
However, one of The View co-hosts referred to Hahn’s sexual relations with Bakker as an affair, and since she’s always maintained that it was a rape, she was right to take issue with that. What did she do? She then turned the tables on Barbara Walters and called Barbara out over her own affair with a married man many years ago.
I’m no fan of Hahn’s. Don’t get me wrong. But if they were going to grill a self-professed rape victim over her “affair” with her married rapist, then Barbara deserves what’s coming to her. She’s a hypocrite, and whether or not The View invited Jessica to talk about herself or to talk about Barbara, Barbara got exposed for her hypocrisy. And I say it’s about damn time.
